Gentrification, where do I begin? My roommate and I drove around East Austin trying to find a new house to lease. We currently live east side-ish and love it. Not for reasons of "diversity" or "culture" but simply because it's close to downtown and we can take the back roads home after a night of hardcore partying. Very legit reason (sarcasm). As I was driving around, I noticed the neighborhood pattern of renovated/totally overpriced house, then old house with spare tires in the lawn and old man sitting on the porch, then back to renovated/totally overpriced house, and so on. I realized THIS is gentrification. It's the Volvos parked next to the Fords. It's the designer lawns with native plants growing next to the lawn with a statue of Virgin Mary in a bathtub. Yet, although these houses share the same parking spaces and fences, there wasnt a sign of neighborly intermingling. Gentrification sucks. Meanwhile, I'm going to continue looking for a new overpriced house and new neighbors to ignore ;)
